Vision:
I began drawing at the age of three on paper that my
mother would bring home from her printing job. She tells me that
I would go through the stacks of paper, creating detailed line
drawings on each page. As a child, I was excited by these drawings,
just as I am at age twenty-three, still excited by drawing.
Similarities between my childhood drawings and recent work served
as a springboard for the investigation of the past 20 years of
my life. Surely the same force that triggered me to draw as a
child acts within me today. My recent work suggests that there
is not only a similar force, but a parallel aesthetic or repetition
of ideas at play. If so, what is the nature of the evolution of
my creative process? Could it be that creative energy is cyclic:
perhaps circulating throughout open channels in time? My childhood
investigation implies we are attached to, driven, and extended
by our past, where at every moment we are creating waves that
we ride long into the future.
My recent work is a series of computer-aided drawing collages
that integrate art from both my childhood and present drawings.
By working intimately with my own childhood imagery, I am creating
a bridge in my history where I am able to respond to and connect
with the creative source of my childhood. Each image is a map
documenting the rediscovery and intermixing of my creative self.
This interplay between similar old and new imagery creates a dimensional
aesthetic that functions as a form of self-analysis.
