John Hylton
Born: Ohio
Resides: Santa Cruz, CA
Vision:
John Hylton’s hanging organic forms harmoniously
weave together notes of the earth, sky and ocean. Inspired by
a quote by Professor Stephen Hawkins concerning the formation
of thought images, John’s installations are reflects of
language-less ideas. Before we can speak an idea there is a precursor
image, a language-less form that fleetingly passes before the
minds eye. John, like Prof Hawkins, seeks to capture those images.
Constructing his beautiful forms in the traditioan of the indigenous
peoples of the California Coast John knots, weaves, and sculptures
found natural materials. His construction method is also influenced
by the Land Artists of the 70’s such as Michael Heizer and
Robert Smithson and later from artists like Magdalena Abakanowicz,
Eva Hesse, and Martin Puryear.
